By the late 19th century hundreds of windmills and watermills had enriched the beautiful landscape of Lithuania and Latvia. The skillful and hard craftsmanship of a miller was honorable and profitable.
The Johnson, Lange, Grube, Friedrichsohn, Kliuksin, Grützmann, Molheim & Giess families had a proud history of generations of millers milling the grain for the bread, the grain for the livestock, etc. to supply their communities.
History tells us that bread has kept societies alive and functioning. The miller industry is, therefore, one of the most important occupations of humanity. Without the miller's work, there would be no daily bread. Dealing with grain, a vital source of food obliges a miller day by day to show respect for what they have to do.
" Eat thy bread with joy and thankfulness !"
For decades Valerian Julius Johnson and Adolf Johnson were millers at windmill in Stultiškiai / Upyte, Lithuania. Today the windmill is Lithuania’s only Linen museum. Please click on the picture to enjoy the slide show.
